Collagen Powder vs Collagen Cream: Which Works Best?

Collagen Powder vs Collagen Creams: Which Actually Works Better for Your Skin?

By Eryn Behan, Founder of NEE-V

Collagen is everywhere. From powders and supplements to expensive creams, serums and face masks, it's become one of the most recognisable ingredients in beauty.

But here's something that often gets lost in the marketing.

Taking collagen and applying collagen to your skin are two very different things.

And if you're spending money on collagen to improve the appearance of your skin, it's worth understanding exactly what each approach can, and can't, do.

Ingestible collagen peptides are consumed and absorbed through digestion, with human clinical research investigating their effects on skin elasticity, hydration and wrinkles. Topical collagen, found in creams and serums, primarily works at the skin's surface to provide hydration and improve the appearance of dryness.

Neither approach directly replaces the collagen your skin loses with age.

So which is better? And does the science support investing in a daily collagen supplement rather than another collagen-infused cream?

Here's what you should know.

What Is the Difference Between Ingestible and Topical Collagen?

The fundamental difference is how collagen interacts with your body.

Ingestible collagen is taken orally, most commonly as a powder, capsule or drink. Hydrolysed collagen peptides are broken down during digestion, and certain amino acids and small peptides are absorbed into the bloodstream.

Specific oral collagen peptide formulations have been studied for their potential effects on skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles.

Topical collagen is applied directly to the skin through creams, masks and serums. Intact collagen molecules are generally too large to penetrate deeply into the dermis, where the skin's structural collagen is found.

Instead, topical collagen primarily helps moisturise the skin and temporarily improve its surface appearance.

Ingestible vs Topical Collagen: At a Glance

Ingestible Collagen Topical Collagen
How it's used Taken orally Applied to skin
How it works Digestion and absorption of amino acids and peptides Primarily moisturises the skin's surface
Skin hydration Some supportive clinical evidence Can improve surface hydration
Skin elasticity Some supportive clinical evidence Limited evidence for collagen itself
Wrinkles Some studies report improvements May temporarily soften dryness-related lines
Replaces lost collagen No direct replacement No direct replacement
Best suited to A beauty-from-within routine Surface hydration and skincare

The important distinction: Ingestible collagen has been investigated for effects on skin characteristics beyond surface moisturisation, while conventional topical collagen is primarily used for its moisturising properties.

Do Collagen Creams Actually Work?

Yes, collagen creams can work as moisturisers. But that doesn't mean they replenish the collagen naturally found deep within your skin.

Collagen is a structural protein, and intact collagen molecules are relatively large.

When applied topically, they generally remain at or near the skin's surface rather than penetrating into the deeper dermal layers.

This means collagen creams can help skin feel softer, smoother and more hydrated.

However, there is limited evidence that conventional topical collagen itself can rebuild the skin's underlying collagen network.

And I think that's an important distinction.

Because when a skincare product promises to restore collagen, consumers may reasonably assume the collagen they're applying is somehow replacing what they've lost.

That's not how conventional collagen creams generally work.

It doesn't make them ineffective moisturisers.

It simply means hydrating the skin and supporting the skin's structural characteristics are different goals.

Other ingredients in a cream, such as retinoids, may have evidence for additional skin benefits independent of the collagen.

Does Ingestible Collagen Actually Work?

Human clinical trials have reported improvements in skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles with certain oral collagen peptide formulations. However, the overall evidence is mixed, and not every collagen supplement has demonstrated these benefits.

This is where the conversation becomes more interesting.

When collagen is consumed, it is digested into amino acids and smaller peptides.

Researchers have investigated whether specific collagen-derived peptides may influence biological processes involved in maintaining the skin's structure.

Some clinical trials have reported improvements in selected skin outcomes following consistent supplementation.

However, study quality, formulation differences and industry funding are important limitations in the wider research.

So I wouldn't tell you that every collagen powder works.

And I certainly wouldn't tell you that simply consuming more collagen guarantees better skin.

What matters is the specific collagen peptide, the amount studied and the evidence behind it.

What Does the Research Say About VERISOL® Collagen Peptides?

This is where ingredient selection becomes particularly important.

VERISOL® Bioactive Collagen Peptides® are a specific composition of collagen peptides investigated in human clinical research for skin-related outcomes.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 114 women aged 45 to 65, participants received either 2.5 g of VERISOL® or placebo daily for eight weeks.

Researchers reported a statistically significant reduction in eye-wrinkle volume in the VERISOL® group compared with placebo.

The research also investigated markers associated with the skin's dermal matrix.

These findings are relevant to understanding why specific collagen peptides have attracted interest in skin-health research, although they don't establish that every collagen supplement will deliver the same results.

And this is precisely why I chose VERISOL® when developing NEE-V.

I wanted clinically researched collagen peptides, not simply generic collagen with an impressive number of grams on the label.

Our bovine collagen formulations, Glow Naked and VeriBerry Skin, use VERISOL® Bioactive Collagen Peptides®.

Can Ingestible Collagen Improve Skin Firmness and Elasticity?

Skin firmness and elasticity are influenced by collagen, elastin and other components of the dermal matrix.

As we age, changes in these structures contribute to wrinkles, reduced firmness and visible changes in skin texture.

Some human clinical studies suggest that specific oral collagen peptides may improve measured skin elasticity.

However, results vary, and supplementation hasn't been proven to reverse the ageing process.

For me, this is where we need to move beyond the idea of a miracle beauty product.

Healthy ageing is about supporting our skin over time, not promising to turn back the clock.

And that's why I believe clinically researched ingredients and consistency matter.

Why Does Collagen Become More Important as We Age?

Collagen is one of the major structural proteins in our skin.

As we age, the organisation and composition of collagen-containing tissues change, contributing to visible signs of ageing.

For women, these changes can become particularly noticeable during perimenopause and menopause.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that research suggests women may lose approximately 30% of their skin collagen during the first five years of menopause.

That's a significant change.

And it's one reason I've become increasingly interested in how we support our skin and overall wellbeing as we age.

Not because ageing is something to fight.

But because understanding what's happening to our bodies helps us make informed decisions.

Why NEE-V Takes a Beauty-From-Within Approach

When I created NEE-V, the beauty market was already full of creams, serums and topical treatments.

I wanted to explore a different approach.

One that considered how we support our skin as part of a broader wellness routine.

That's why NEE-V's bovine collagen formulations are built around VERISOL® Bioactive Collagen Peptides®, rather than relying solely on generic collagen claims.

We focus on:

  • Clinically researched ingredients: Specific peptides investigated in human studies.

  • Purposeful formulations: Ingredients chosen for a reason.

  • Transparency: Helping customers understand what they're taking.

  • Consistency: Making daily collagen simple enough to become a lasting habit.

  • Healthy ageing: Supporting wellbeing rather than promoting fear of getting older.

Our Glow Naked and VeriBerry Skin formulations are designed to fit easily into everyday life.

Mixed into water, a smoothie or another favourite ritual, NEE-V makes beauty from within simple.

Created with care. Backed by science. Loved for results.

Should You Use Ingestible Collagen Instead of Skincare?

Not necessarily.

Ingestible collagen and topical skincare can complement one another because they work differently.

A well-formulated moisturiser helps care for the skin externally.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect against UV damage.

Ingredients such as retinoids have their own evidence base for addressing selected signs of skin ageing.

And certain ingestible collagen peptides have been studied for their potential effects on skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles.

Neither replaces the other.

In fact, I think the most considered approach to skin health combines appropriate skincare with good nutrition and consistent wellness habits.

The best skin routines are layered.

Is Ingestible Collagen Better Than Collagen Cream?

If your goal is to explore the potential benefits of collagen peptides for skin elasticity and wrinkles, ingestible collagen is the more relevant option because specific oral peptides have been investigated for those outcomes in human clinical trials.

If your goal is immediate surface moisturisation, a topical cream may be more directly useful.

This doesn't mean collagen supplements outperform every skincare product.

It means the two approaches have different mechanisms and evidence bases.

And it's worth understanding that before deciding where to spend your money.

Does More Collagen Mean Better Results?

Not necessarily.

This is another area where I think consumers deserve better information.

Some collagen supplements promote very large serving sizes as though more grams automatically mean better results.

But a larger serving of generic collagen isn't necessarily more effective than a studied serving of specific bioactive collagen peptides.

For example, the VERISOL® wrinkle study investigated a daily serving of 2.5 g.

That doesn't mean smaller servings are always better.

It means the serving size should be considered alongside the ingredient's clinical research.

At NEE-V, we believe in understanding what the science actually supports rather than using quantity as a substitute for quality.

How Long Does Ingestible Collagen Take to Work?

Collagen isn't an overnight treatment.

Clinical studies examining oral collagen peptides commonly measure outcomes after several weeks of consistent use, often around eight to twelve weeks.

Individual results vary, and no supplement can guarantee a particular outcome.

But one thing is clear from how these studies are designed.

Consistency is important when evaluating a daily collagen routine.

It's why NEE-V offers Subscribe & Save, with 10% off subscription orders and flexible delivery options.

What Should You Look for in an Ingestible Collagen Supplement?

Before choosing a collagen supplement, I would ask five questions.

1. What specific collagen peptides does it contain?

Look beyond the word collagen on the label.

2. Have those peptides been studied in humans?

Look for research involving the actual ingredient, not just general claims about collagen.

3. What serving size was investigated?

More grams don't automatically mean better results.

4. What else is included?

Consider the full ingredient list and whether the formulation suits your needs.

5. Will you take it consistently?

A routine only works if it fits into your everyday life.

These are the principles that guide how we formulate NEE-V.

Final Thoughts: Looking Beyond the Surface

I think the future of beauty is becoming less about chasing the next miracle cream and more about understanding how our skin works.

Topical skincare will always have an important place.

But there's also growing interest in what we can do from within.

And for me, that's where the conversation around collagen becomes particularly interesting.

Not every collagen product is the same.

Not every ingredient has the same research.

And not every promise on a label tells the full story.

The best approach is one built around good evidence, good skincare and simple habits we can maintain consistently.

That's the philosophy behind NEE-V.

Ingestible vs Topical Collagen: Frequently Asked Questions

Is ingestible collagen better than topical collagen?

Ingestible collagen peptides have been investigated in human clinical trials for selected skin outcomes, including elasticity and wrinkles. Topical collagen primarily provides moisturising benefits. Neither is universally better for every skincare goal.

Can collagen creams increase collagen in the skin?

Intact collagen applied through conventional creams generally doesn't penetrate deeply enough to replace structural collagen within the dermis. Collagen creams mainly help moisturise the skin.

Does collagen powder work better than collagen cream?

They work differently. Collagen powder is consumed and digested, while collagen creams act primarily at the skin surface. Specific oral collagen peptides have been studied for skin outcomes, but not every powder has demonstrated clinical benefits.

Does ingestible collagen help wrinkles?

Some clinical studies involving specific collagen peptides have reported improvements in wrinkle measurements. Results vary, and collagen supplements shouldn't be considered a guaranteed wrinkle treatment.

How long does ingestible collagen take to work?

Clinical trials commonly assess skin outcomes over eight to twelve weeks or longer. Individual results vary, and consistent use does not guarantee visible changes.

Can you use collagen cream and collagen powder together?

Yes. Topical moisturising products and oral collagen supplements work differently and can be used as part of the same skincare and wellness routine.

What is the best collagen for women over 40?

There isn't one product that's best for everyone. Consider the specific collagen peptides, supporting clinical research, formulation, serving size and dietary preferences.

Why does NEE-V use VERISOL® collagen?

NEE-V's bovine collagen formulations use VERISOL® Bioactive Collagen Peptides® because they are a specific ingredient with relevant human clinical research investigating skin-related outcomes.

Does ingestible collagen replace skincare?

No. Ingestible collagen doesn't replace sunscreen, moisturisers or other evidence-based skincare. A comprehensive approach to skin health can include both external skincare and nutrition.

What should I look for in a collagen supplement?

Look for clearly identified collagen peptides, relevant human clinical research, an appropriate serving size, transparent ingredients and a formulation that suits your daily routine.
